Previously the Director of the City Planning Department in the City of Warwick, Rhode Island, Barbara Sokoloff began consulting in 1986 and created Barbara Sokoloff Associates. In 2026, the company changed its name to Sokoloff Farias Associates to reflect a change in the ownership of the company which is now held jointly by Barbara, Derek and Seth. Sokoloff Farias Associates provides its clients with consulting services for all phases of development ranging from financial feasibility, market research, and deal structuring during pre-development through project completion.

Projects have included adaptive re-use for abandoned buildings, manufactured housing, and condominiums. Other responsibilities include development of financing programs, utilization programs, operating budgets, and coordination of the construction manager, architect, owner, state agencies, and consortium. SFA also creates and implements public participation and involvement programs with collateral materials for public agencies including RI Statewide Planning, the RI Department of Transportation, and cities and towns.

SFA has raised over $600 million in financing for over 2,000 units of affordable housing utilizing Rhode Island Housing, HUD, and private financing programs.
